Bahir Dar is one of Ethiopia’s most relaxed cities — palm-lined and set on the shore of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. It makes an easy, pleasant base for two of the region’s highlights.
Lake Tana’s island monasteries
Boats leave from the lakeshore for the peninsulas and islands, where centuries-old monasteries sit hidden among the trees. The monastery churches on the Zege peninsula, such as Ura Kidane Mehret, are famous for their vivid painted interiors. A half-day boat trip takes in several, along with the lake’s birdlife.
The Blue Nile Falls
A short drive south of the city, the Blue Nile Falls — Tis Abay, "the smoking water" — are at their most powerful in and just after the rainy season. A walk to the viewpoints and across the old Portuguese bridge is a rewarding half-day out.

- Water flow at the falls is strongest from roughly July to October; a hydro plant reduces it at drier times.
