A guide to the Cape Winelands
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl — South Africa’s wine country near Cape Town: the estates, the wine tram, and when to visit.
An hour inland from Cape Town, the Cape Winelands are a landscape of vineyards, mountain passes and Cape Dutch estates — one of the most rewarding day trips or short stays in South Africa.
The main towns
- Stellenbosch — the historic hub: oak-lined streets, a university buzz, and hundreds of estates on its doorstep.
- Franschhoek — the “French corner”, known for fine dining and the hop-on hop-off Wine Tram.
- Paarl — larger and less touristy, with big-name cellars and the Afrikaans Language Monument.
Tasting tips
- Many estates want tastings and cellar tours booked ahead; plan two or three a day, not more.
- Use the Franschhoek Wine Tram or hire a driver so nobody has to stay dry — drink-driving laws are strict.
- Look out for Chenin Blanc and Cape reds, and pair them with a long farm lunch.
When to go
