Driving the Garden Route
South Africa’s Garden Route road trip — Knysna, the coast and forests between Cape Town and Gqeberha, plus stops, timing and where to break the drive.
The Garden Route runs along South Africa’s southern coast between the Western and Eastern Cape — a forgiving, scenic self-drive of lagoons, forests, beaches and mountain passes. Give it four to seven days.
The main stops
- Hermanus — a detour near the start for land-based whale watching (see the dedicated guide) before you join the route proper.
- Mossel Bay & Wilderness — long beaches, lagoons and gentle hikes as the route gets going.
- Knysna — the lagoon town at the heart of the route, framed by the sandstone Heads; oysters, forest walks and boat trips.
- Plettenberg Bay — beaches, dolphins and the Robberg peninsula walk.
- Tsitsikamma (Storms River) — suspension bridges, the ancient forest and the country’s original bungee at Bloukrans.
Where it ends
The route eases into Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), the gateway to malaria-free Big Five safaris at Addo Elephant National Park — a natural finale before flying home.
Practicalities & when to go
A rental car is essential; the N2 is easy driving and distances between stops are short. Spring to autumn (September–April) is warmest; whale season peaks June–November. Browse places to stay in Knysna, Gqeberha and Hermanus.
