Getting around Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is large and spread out, sitting at around 2,355 metres — high enough that the air is thin and evenings are cool even near the equator. Getting around is easy once you know the options, and none of them are expensive by international standards.

From Bole International Airport

The airport is in the Bole district, roughly 5–8 km from most central neighbourhoods — usually 20–40 minutes by car depending on traffic. The simplest arrival is a ride-hailing app or a pre-arranged pickup from your host. Airport taxis are available too, but agree the fare before you get in, as they are not metered.

Ride-hailing apps

App-based taxis are the most reliable way to move around for a visitor: the price is set in the app, you are not negotiating, and you have a record of the trip. Several operate locally — Ride, Feres and ZayRide among them. Download one before you arrive and add a local number if you can; some accept cash on arrival at the destination.

Minibuses and the light rail

• Blue-and-white minibuses run fixed routes across the city and are extremely cheap. A conductor calls out the destination; you pay a few birr. Cheap and local, but crowded and hard to navigate without some Amharic or a local to guide you.
• The Addis Ababa Light Rail runs on two lines (north–south and east–west) and is a flat, low fare. Useful along its corridors, less so if your stay is off the line.

A few practical notes

• Ethiopia keeps its own 12-hour clock, counted from dawn — "3 o’clock" locally can mean 9 a.m. Confirm times in "European" or "ferenj" time when it matters, like check-in or a driver pickup.
• Carry small birr notes for minibuses and tips; cards are accepted only in larger hotels and some restaurants.
• Traffic peaks morning and early evening. Build in buffer time for the airport run.
