Tracking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s signature experience — an hour with a habituated family in the forested Virunga volcanoes, and one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters anywhere.
Permits
A gorilla permit is required and is issued by the Rwanda Development Board. Numbers are strictly limited each day, so permits should be arranged well in advance, especially in peak season. They are premium-priced — this is a high-value, low-impact experience by design, and the fees fund conservation and communities.
Where to base yourself
- Most visitors fly into Kigali, spend a night, then drive 2–3 hours north to Musanze (Ruhengeri) at the foot of the volcanoes.
- Staying in or near Musanze the night before lets you reach the park headquarters for the early-morning briefing and start.
What to expect on the trek
- Treks vary from about one hour to several, over steep, muddy, high-altitude terrain — a reasonable level of fitness helps, and porters can be hired.
- You get one hour with the gorillas once found. Bring layers, sturdy boots, gloves and rain gear; the forest is wet and cool.
When to go
