Safari in Kruger National Park
How to plan a Kruger safari — self-drive vs guided, the Hazyview gateway, private reserves, and the best time of year to see the Big Five.
Kruger is one of Africa’s great game reserves — nearly the size of a small country, with the Big Five and an excellent road network that makes it uniquely accessible, whether you drive yourself or join a lodge.
Self-drive vs guided
- Self-drive: the sealed roads, rest camps and day permits make Kruger one of the few Big-Five parks you can explore in a normal rental car, at your own pace and budget.
- Guided/private reserves: the adjoining Sabi Sand and other private reserves offer expert-guided game drives, off-road tracking and much higher big-cat sightings — pricier, but the classic luxury-safari experience.
Getting there
Most trips route through Johannesburg (about a 4–5 hour drive or a short flight to Nelspruit/Skukuza). The town of Hazyview near the Phabeni Gate is a handy self-catering base by the southern, wildlife-rich section of the park.
When to go
The dry winter (May–September) is prime: thin bush and animals massing at waterholes make for the best sightings, and it’s malaria-low season. Summer is green, hot and good for birds and newborns. See places to stay in Hazyview and Johannesburg.
