Things to do in Jinja: the source of the Nile

Jinja is Uganda’s adventure capital at the source of the Nile — white-water rafting, kayaking, bungee and quad trails, an easy trip from Kampala.

Jinja, where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria to begin its journey north, is Uganda’s adventure hub — and a relaxed riverside base a couple of hours east of Kampala.

On the water

  • White-water rafting on the Nile is world-class, with operators running half- and full-day trips for a range of nerve levels.
  • Calmer options include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and sunset boat cruises to the “source of the Nile” marker.
  • For a jolt, there’s a riverside bungee jump straight toward the water.

On land

  • Quad-bike and mountain-bike trails run through the villages and plantations along the river.
  • The old town has a laid-back café and craft scene; nearby Sezibwa Falls and Itanda Falls make easy half-days.

When to go

Jinja works year-round; the drier months (December–February, June–September) are most reliable for water sports. Find places to stay in Jinja and Kampala.
