The National Mall
The two-mile Mall runs from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, past the Washington Monument and the reflecting pool. The Smithsonian museums lining it — Air and Space, Natural History, American History, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture — are all free; the last two often need timed passes booked ahead.
Monuments & beyond
- The Lincoln, Jefferson, MLK and war memorials are floodlit and atmospheric after dark — a good evening walk.
- Tour the Capitol (free, book ahead) and see the White House from Lafayette Square.
- Leave the Mall for Georgetown’s cobbled streets and waterfront, or U Street and Adams Morgan for food and nightlife.
Getting around & when to go
