Cape Town is one of the world’s great self-catering cities, wrapped around Table Mountain between the mountains and two oceans. Where you stay depends on whether you want the city, the beach or the quiet suburbs.
The areas
- City Bowl (City Centre, Gardens, De Waterkant) — walkable to restaurants, museums and the cable car; a central first base.
- Atlantic Seaboard (Sea Point, Green Point, Camps Bay, Clifton) — promenade, beaches and sunsets, minutes from town.
- V&A Waterfront — polished, safe and family-friendly, with the harbour, shops and the Zeitz MOCAA museum.
- Southern Suburbs (Constantia, Newlands) — leafy and calm, near the winelands and Kirstenbosch garden.
Getting around & staying safe
- A rental car is the easiest way to reach the beaches, Cape Point and the winelands; ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt) is widely used in the city.
- Take normal city precautions — keep valuables out of sight, prefer ride-hailing after dark, and ask your host about the specific area.
When to go
