Dubai is easy to enjoy on a self-catering holiday-home stay, but the city is spread along the coast, so where you base yourself shapes the trip. Here is how the main areas compare.
The neighbourhoods
- Downtown & Business Bay — the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the fountains. Central, walkable, and on the Metro; best for first-timers who want the icons on their doorstep.
- Dubai Marina & JBR — high-rise living around a yacht marina with a beach walk. Lively restaurants and nightlife, a tram and Metro link.
- Jumeirah & Umm Suqeim — low-rise, beachy, near the Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah. Quieter and good for families.
- Deira & Bur Dubai — the older trading heart across the creek: souks, abras (water taxis) and the most authentic, best-value food.
- Palm Jumeirah — the famous palm-shaped island, resort-style beaches and views.
Holiday homes and licensing
Short-term holiday homes in Dubai are regulated: legitimate listings are operated under a permit from the Department of Economy and Tourism, and a small per-night Tourism Dirham fee applies. It is worth confirming a stay is properly licensed.
Getting around
- The Metro is clean, cheap and air-conditioned, running along the main coastal corridor; a Nol card covers Metro, tram and buses.
- Ride-hailing (Careem, Uber) and taxis are plentiful and reasonable.
- Summer (June–September) is very hot — plan indoor sights midday; November–March is the pleasant season.
