Johannesburg is big, spread out and defined by its neighbourhoods, so where you base yourself matters. It is also the main gateway to Kruger and the wider region, so many visitors pass through.
The areas
- Sandton — the modern business hub, polished and secure, with malls, restaurants and the Gautrain to the airport and Pretoria.
- Rosebank — leafier and walkable, with galleries, a rooftop market and the Gautrain.
- Maboneng & Braamfontein — regenerated inner-city districts with street art, cafés and a young creative scene; go with local knowledge.
- Soweto — the historic township and heart of the anti-apartheid story around Vilakazi Street; increasingly popular for guesthouse stays and tours.
Getting around & staying safe
- The Gautrain links the airport, Sandton, Rosebank and Pretoria quickly and safely; elsewhere use ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt).
- Take normal big-city precautions: don’t walk with valuables on show, prefer driving or ride-hailing after dark, and ask your host about the specific area.
